What is Creative Therapy?

Creative therapy is a type of psychotherapy that uses non-verbal methods to help you express yourself. Creative therapists normally train in one specialism (art therapy, music therapy, dramatherapy, dance/movement therapy or play therapy), but are able to utilise a variety of creative options during their sessions.
Sometimes talking about difficult things feels too much. That's where creative therapy differs from traditional 'talking' therapy, giving you opportunities to express your inner thoughts and feelings in ways that feel more comfortable. Of course, you're free to talk about anything you want, too!

What happens during a session?
Sessions will look different based on your needs, or your child's needs.
Every session generally starts with some kind of check-in, where you're invited to share how you are or how things have gone during the week. This can be done through talking, drawing, using objects, movement, music, painting or more!
Following the check-in, I might direct you or your child towards an activity, or I might sit back and allow the session to be led by you/them. Child-directed play, art, storymaking, puppet work and sensory play are just some of the options! These methods are powerful containers for children to express themselves. I'll be there to listen, respond and encourage your child to explore the material in line with their needs.
Older children or young people may simply want to talk through their thoughts and feelings, and this is completely fine too. We can think about what's happening and explore it together as directly or indirectly as needed.
However the session looks or progresses, I will be listening and responding to you or your child completely authentically and with genuine care.
